Multiple Intelligences Update

I wanted to update you on some of the things we have been doing in our classroom. As you all probably know, our theme for being a school of enrichment is Multiple Intelligences. It is important that the students know how they learn best and that they are provided opportunities to learn in this way. Not only this, but it is also important that they are presented with opportunities to expand their boundaries and learn in other ways outside of their learning style.

The students took a Learning Style quiz. Each of them were able to identify what type of "smart" they are and then we associated that with different ways that they can learn. They were all amazed that the quiz's results actually showed how they ENJOY learning.

Throughout this year, we have done a ton of learning in multiple ways. I allow my body smart kids to act things out, stand while they learn, create and manipulate with their hands. The visual-spatial learners have been given opportunities to draw and create posters, as well as build models. The nature smart kids have gotten to learn about animals and study/learn outside. The musical students have gotten lots of opportunities to write poetry, sing songs while learning and listen to music while they work. The interpersonal students have gotten to work, read and create with other students. Group work is their favorite and I've given them the option in many situations to work with partners. My intrapersonal kids prefer to work alone and I've allowed them to do this.

Our landform projects that we are currently working on have given the students the chance to expand their learning styles and to challenge themselves. Many of the students are creating plays, some have learned how to design a PowerPoint presentation, and some have made posters. With the option of how they wanted to present their information, some of the students feel more comfortable because they are in control of their learning and feel confident in their own learning styles. Others have had the opportunity to take on something new and push themselves to do something that maybe they've never done before. Either way, they are growing and taking ownership of their own learning. I can't wait to share their projects with you!!
